Frequently Asked Questions
“How to you feel that you are most valuable to clients”?
As there are so many trades and materials, a seemingly overwhelming number of resources and a vast body of technical knowledge that go into interior design, the most rewarding part of my work is to help a client by navigating these and oversee each piece coming together into a finished space. They tell me what they like and I deliver it.
“What is the most satisfying part of your interior design work”?
It is immensely satisfying to carry a project from its inception, where the client and I are defining needs and identifying their taste, right through to standing in the room that we have created together. What will it look like? What materials will we use and which new resources will be discovered? I find it intensely gratifying to be truly helpful to them, to plan and pull together the aesthetics of the design together for them in a way that they couldn’t have done on their own. There is wonderful reward in (the act of) being useful.
“What does the design process look like?"
Often, we start with a phone appointment. This gives us a chance to define the parameters of the project and each ask questions. I never charge for this appointment because I like to give new clients the opportunity to get to know me, my work and what I can do for them without any pressure. If it is a good mutual fit, we set the timing of the project and then begin with the first on site meeting. From there I quickly work with them to identify their taste and desired style. We establish their priorities and needs for the project and I draw up a budget. Then it is on to the heavy design work. I take everything we have talked about, all the notes, photos and measurements I have gathered and formulate a design plan.
"How do you help clients with setting a budget"?
Working with the budget to establish the best possible allocation of funds within a design plan is an important part of what I do. There are two ways the budget is set. Some clients have a pre-set amount they want to invest and I show them what can be done with it and how best to prioritize how the funds are spent. For other people they know what they want and need but not how much it will cost. For them, I write a room by room and item by item list, which yields a projected budget for the project as a whole. Throughout all projects I keep the budget up to date as items are purchased so we always know where the budget stands.
